Jumpin' At The Woodside

Not sure if I intended the "Five" to be what's currently bouncing out of my iPod as opposed to strictly new music, but the former certainly has been the case. This I Dig of You – Hank Mobley With some help from Miles’ rhythm section, Hank’s tune is one of those recordings that most anyone can point to and immediately identify as part of the jazz genre. I may need to post a “Five” devoted exclusively to jazz to capture some of my latest downloads, which include pianist Wynton Kelly who’s featured on this set. This is excellent underrated, 1950s-era be-bop jazz, worth downloading the whole album for any level of jazz enthusiast. Sounds like a euphemism for well... knockin' boots. Dagnabbit, I promised myself I wouldn't mix euphemisms! Anyway, Old Horizontal is a beer, or rather a winter seasonal barleywine-style ale from Victory Brewing Company located outside Philadelphia in Downingtown, Pa. More importantly available here at the Total Wine . At a whopping 10.5% alcohol it's right up there with the Mad Elf from Tröegs Brewing Company of Harrisburg, Pa, which edges Horizontal out at 11%. Old Horizontal offers a nice hoppy taste and aroma different than the Belgian-style Mad Elf with its spices, honey and cherries. But it's "apples and oranges" as far as comparison goes. With the bone-chilling cold we've been having, Old Horizontal is definitely in season. Speaking of Tröegs, I stumbled across the commercial below for Tröegs Brewing Company and dare I say, this is advertising genius! OK maybe not, but damn funny!

Starting to snow here, may get 1-2 inches of wet slushy stuff. This is big doing's for here, probably shut the whole city down! UPDATE: So much for the snow, just wet stuff nothing stuck. Today the sun is shining bright, but very cold.

I was in New York City this week for all of 31 hours, Wednesday morning until Thursday evening. No matter how long or short my trip lasts, I always feel like I was there for a week. Most trips to the corporate home office at the Time Warner Center on Manhattan's Columbus Circle revolve around specific meetings for work and this trip was no different. Don't get me wrong, I'll take a trip to NYC over the former home of Adelphia's corporate office in Coudersport ( Where-the-Hell-is-that ) PA, any day of the week. Traveling up to the NYC office entails "suiting up" as they say on the CBS TV show "How I Met Your Mother." Yep, got to throw on the ol' suit and tie, and with the meetings and VP muckity mucks lurking around every turn, not to mention our Grand Poobah muckity muck, you've got to "suit up" mentally too - got to be sharp and on your toes. It's 11 days into 2008 and I have yet to post anything on the blog! The Monkey and family joined me to ring in the New Year. Rob Monkey and I toasted with my favorite champagne (or sparkling wine) Blanc de Noirs from California's Chandon winery. Yeah, I know it's only "champagne" if it comes from the Champagne region of France, but this ugly American is going to call it champagne. The Monkey also brought along a couple cigars for us to smoke along with our toasting. These were Acid Cigars that are cured in red wine. I rarely smoke a cigar, but I must say these were very nice, thanks Monkey! Made a ham for New Year's Day and what is starting to become a holiday staple here at The Woodside, my mashed sweet potatoes . They are actually supposed to be made with a creme brulee style top, but I forgo the melting of the brown sugar.
