Summer Mix 2026

Image
This year's summer mix spans 50 years with 25 tracks from 1976 to 2026. With the exception of a handful of classics from the 70s, 80s and 90s, this year's tracklist is almost entirely new tracks, and many destined to become classics themselves. The mix opens with the sounds of a tranquil summer morning, and closes with the sounds of a summer evening with a little Count Basie - Enjoy! Seagulls - St. Paul & The Broken Bones (2025) Gonna Love You - John Hollier & the Rêverie (2026) Stay On That - Johnny Blue Skies (2026) On My Soul - Bruno Mars (2026) Got You Right - GoldFord (2025) Ice Cold Lakes - The Fray (2026) The Spirit of Radio - Rush (1980) IRL - Devon Gilfillian (2026) Find Your Way Back - Jefferson Starship (1981) Keepin' The Road - The Gringos (2025) Moon - Fossil (1994) Where There's Smoke, There's Fire - The Black Keys (2025) Take It Easy (Live) - Eagles (1980) You and Me Time (feat. Summer Mix 2025

This year's summer mix spans 56 years with 20 tracks from 1969 to 2025. The mix opens with the tranquil sounds of a gentle stream on a summer's day, and closes with a nighttime melody of crickets chirping and a crackling fire with thunder rumbling in the distance of an approaching summer storm. Pour a few cocktails and enjoy on an afternoon or evening. Sunshine In The Room (feat. Jon Batiste) - James Bay (2024) Miles And Miles - The Heavy Heavy (2020) Woodstock - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (1970) Only Love Matters - The Black Keys (2024) Red River - Eddie 9V (2024) I Feel Good - Pink Sweat$ (2021) Love Is Alive - Gary Wright (1975) She Wants To Go Dancing - Mt. Summer Mix 2024

Image
This year's summer mix spans 61 years with 26 tracks from 1963 to 2024, and touches every decade in between. The mix opens with the tranquil sounds of a gentle stream and birds chirping on a summer's day, and closes with a nighttime melody of ocean waves crashing and crickets chirping. Again this year, no plot or theme other than songs that seem to fit with kicking back on a summer's afternoon or evening. Crème Brûlée - Sitting on Stacy (2024) Wonderland - JJ Grey & Mofro (2024) Dominoes - Jungle (2023) Tiny Moves - Bleachers (2024) The Place That Makes Me Happy - The Moss (2023) Mood Swings - Marcus King (2024) Fool To Think (Live) - Dave Matthews Band (2004) Vehicle - The Ides of March (1970) Digging Your Scene - The Blow Monkeys (1986) Beautiful People (Stay High) - The Black Keys (2024) Summer Girl - HAIM (2019) August 10 - Khruangbin (2018) All I Ever Wonder - St. Paul & The Broken Bones (2016) Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - The Police (1981) Let Loos...

Summer Mix 2023

Image
This year's summer mix spans 64 years with 30 tracks from 1959 to 2023, and touches every decade in between. The mix opens with the tranquil sounds of a gentle stream and birds chirping on a summer's day, and closes with a nighttime melody of crickets and cicadas following the final track. No real plot or theme this year, even though a few tracks mention fruit/citrus, but these just add to the summer feel along with obvious gems like "sunburn" and "Saturday In the Park." The mix includes two quintessential live tracks from Journey, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary, "Feeling That Way" and "Anytime." These are followed by Dave Matthews Band's live version of "Crush" from their live release "Live Trax Vol. 13: Busch Stadium - St. Louis, MO - June 7, 2008." I was at this show this, hard to believe it's been 15 years since. Cheap Trick is also celebrating their 50th anniversary, and I included a rocking...

Summer Mix 2022

Image
Hoping to spread some joyful noise In a world that's seemingly upside down and spinning in all directions for the worse. This year's summer mix spans 65 years with 27 tracks from 1957 to 2022, and touches every decade in between. No theme again this year, but this year's mix feels like a part II or B-side to last year's mix. Lots of classic tunes, new and old as usual; but a bit more laidback than last year, and at the same time shares a similar groove and some of the same artists. The opening and closing includes a snippet of Maxwell's "The Urban Theme" instrumental. This is the first time I've ever repeated a track from a previous summer mix, not bad for the last 17 years or so. I couldn't help it, the Soul Survivors' "Expressway to Your Heart" fit so perfectly as a follow-up/answer back to Joss Stone's "Don't Cha Wanna Ride," I couldn't pass it up. I previously used "Expressway to Your Heart" in my ...

Summer Mix 2021

Image
This year's summer mix spans 52 years with 25 tracks from 1969 to 2021, and touches every decade in between. There is a "love" theme throughout, but no storyline this year. There are some summertime sound effects -- opening with a summer's day and closing with a summer's evening with a brief snippet of "When You Wish Upon a Star." If Not Now (Then When) [feat. Durand Jones] - The Bamboos (2021) Valerie (feat. Amy Winehouse) - Mark Ronson featuring Amy Winehouse (2007) Summertime Magic - Childish Gambino (2018) Hypotheticals - Lake Street Dive (2021) Don't Tell Me - Soulive (2007) Julia - Mt. Joy (2018) Something's Got to Give - Labrinth (2019) Big Ol' Game - Joss Stone (2007) Keep Going - The Revivalists (2015) The Fever - Bruce Springsteen (1973) Colors - Black Pumas (2019) Dried Up River - The Lone Bellow (2021) Out on the Weekend (Live) - Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats (2017) All My Sweetest Dreams - Emmaline (2019) You're ...

Summer Mix 2020

Image
This year's summer mix spans 51 years with 20 tracks from 1969 to 2020, and touches every decade in between. This year's mix was inspired by film noir and more recent genre (or neo-noir) films with steamy Florida locations like  Body Heat (1981) , Night Moves (1975) , Wild Things (1998) , and Blood and Wine (1996) . I also included snippets of the "Main Title" from the Body Heat soundtrack, along with a few climatic sound effects. So Caught Up - The Teskey Brothers - (2019) Turn It on Again (Live) - Genesis - (1982) Don't Owe You a Thang (Live) - Gary Clark Jr. - (2014) Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing - Stevie Wonder - (1973) I Got The... - Joss Stone - (2012) Straight On - Heart - (1978) Bittersweet (Live) - Big Head Todd & The Monsters - (1998) 3AM - Matchbox Twenty - (1996) One Way Out (Live) - The Allman Brothers Band - (1971) Sumthin' Sumthin' - Maxwell - (1996) In the Evening - Led Zeppelin - (1979) Use Somebody - Kings ...

Summer Mix 2019

Image
This year's summer mix spans 56 years with 25 tracks from 1963 to 2019, and touches every decade in between. This year was all about the funk, old and new, and I was ready to put together a playlist of nothing but funk/R&B. But, then I thought... what I like most about mixes is the change up. So hopefully things aren't too watered down, but I think there's a good blend of tunes, and even a nod to the 50th anniversary of the "summer of love" with two tracks from 1969. Although I have to admit that was just a coincidence and not planned. Something I did plan was using the Jason Mraz and Michael Franti tracks back to back. I've wanted to include them in a summer mix since they came out, but never had the right blend 'til now. It was also good to include one of my all-time favorite Dave Matthews' tracks "Captain." Something about that song always reminds me of summer. Not as many new songs as I would have liked, and especially thi...

Summer Mix 2018

Image
This year's summer mix spans 51 years with 22 tracks from 1967 to 2018, and touches every decade in between. This year's mix really didn't come together until I got back to changing up styles and adding more rock tunes to off set the many similar-sounding smoother songs, or so-called "chugga chugga" tunes mentioned in my 2015 post . For me, the more the mix changes up, the more I want to listen again and holds my interest. Not sure if I've mentioned anything about my choice for the cover photo in the past, but this year's is a recent favorite of mine. It's a spot on the Lehigh River only accessible via a bike/run/walk trail. Hope you enjoy this year's mix - Salud ! New Love - Amos Lee (2016) Wish I Knew You - The Revivalists (2015) What Is And What Should Never Be - Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes (2000) Got To Give It Up, Pt. 1 (Edit) - Marvin Gaye (1977) A Little Honey - Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats (2018) Oogum ...

Summer Mix 2017

Image
This year's summer mix spans 48 years over 28 tracks from 1969 to 2017, and touches all decades in between. A few months ago I heard "FM" by Steely Dan for the first time in years. Almost immediately I knew I had to include it in the mix, but I also used the track to build the rest of the mix around. It has this blend of jazz, blues, rock, soul and R&B that I wanted to use throughout the mix. Next, I wanted a track at or near the end that was a little unexpected, but still felt right, like the country track by The Band Perry, which closed out the 2013 summer mix . Once I had those, then it was a matter of finding the right blend of new and old tracks to compliment each other and mesh the styles mentioned above, but this year I did it with a slight twist. In March, when I saw Tedeschi Trucks Band in Nashville , I noticed that the setlist on 3/3 was put together with not just one song leading up to the next, but sometimes two and three songs leading the way...

Summer Mix 2016

Image
While this year's summer mix spans 60 years, nearly half of the songs are from 2015-16, and with a few exceptions fall primarily within the rock and/or blues genres. Rock isn't dead, you just need to know where to look. Some of the older tracks have been long-time summer favorites that had yet to make it onto a mix, like "Arc of a Diver" by Steve Winwood and "Thunder And Lightning" by Phil Collins. Both of these and a few others have been synonymous with summer since first listen. There are also some extended mellow sections that give the mix a nice ebb and flow throughout. Initially I was going to include the new Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Dark Necessities" and Eric Clapton's "Catch the Blues", but felt their tone didn't mesh with the other tracks. - Salud! Summer Mix 2016 Midnight Sun (intro) - Jackie Gleason (1963) Waiting on Your Love - Eric Krasno (2016) Soundcheck - Catfish and the Bottlemen (2016) Message In A B...

Summer Mix 2015 (Sunrise - Sunset - Midnight)

Image
This year's summer mix ... A summer's day from sunrise to sunset to midnight and everything in between , along with an additional theme that I'll let you figure out for yourself. I broke out the track listing below in chapters by time of day. I went into this mix thinking only that "Ripple" by the Grateful Dead would be at/near the end, and "Fool for Love" by Lord Huron had this great opening that sounded like a sunrise. As I started to gather songs for the mix, I realized I had too many similar sounding songs. Mike, our one-time mix competitor, referred to them as "chugga-chugga" songs due to their beat. When I traveled up north earlier this month, I heard songs that eventually found their way into the mix, and helped create a flow for the mix. One song in particular, "Rock & Roll" by The Velvet Underground came on while in a cab from a Phillies game back to the hotel. The cab driver cranked it up and asked us, ...

What better way to kick off the long holiday weekend than sharing this year's summer mix  - 35 tracks, clocks in at about 2 hours and 14 minutes, and spans 47 years of music. Summer Mix 2012

Image
Here it is... the premiere of this year's summer mix . Lots of new stuff with old stuff mixed in, and made for repeat listening as the first song is a good follow up to the last song. This year's mix pairs well with any brew, wine or libation but for me a nice unfiltered IPA did just fine. Funny thing is last year's Motown-infused summer mix was inspired by the Fitz & The Tantrums, who are included this year. Tried as I could, they just didn't fit in to last year's summer mix . This year I was bound and determined to include more new songs, especially after being introduced to so many new acts/artists at last year's DMB Caravan festival in Atlantic City . The last song was added near the end of putting the whole mix together, even though it seems as if the whole mix builds up to that song. A happy accident I guess. A little known fact is that I don't repeat songs in my summer mixes. This goes back to 2003/04 when I started putting them together...

Summer Mix 2011

Although we're not holding an officially judged Summer Mix competition this year, I put together a Summer Mix that holds to the rules of past competitions with Ol' Lazy Acres, DJ Blanco, and The Monkey. Summer Mix 2008

Now that the judges' votes are in , below is my track list for my summer mix. This year I thought what best captures the feeling of summer better than love. With my song selection, I tried to portray the many sides of love and even mixed in clips from the " Manhattan " soundtrack in the first and last songs. Timmay's Summer Mix 2008 The Boys Are Back In Town (Rhapsody In Blue Intro) – Thin Lizzy All I Do – The Derek Trucks Band Callin’ – Soulive I’m Yours – Jason Mraz Evergreen - The Black Crowes Love Spreads – The Stone Roses She Loves The Sunset – Old 97’s Super Duper Love (Are You Diggin’ On Me?), Pt. 1 – Joss Stone Jungle Love – Steve Miller Band Santeria – Sublime Hey Hey What Can I Do – Led Zeppelin Sweet Caroline (Live) – Dave Matthews Band If You Really Love Me – Stevie Wonder Badge (Live) – Eric Clapton When She Begins – Social Distortion Jackie Wilson Said (I’m In Heaven When You Smile) – Van Morrison Many The Miles – Sara Bareilles Save Me – Dave Matthews O...

Summer Mixes - The Beginning

Image
Reading Mike's post on the Summer Mix blog made me recall creating my own mix tapes, which goes back to sometime in the early 1980s. Music for me then was typical rock radio stuff of the era - Van Halen, Billy Squier, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, etc. The summer of 1983 I experienced a sort of renaissance. I started working as a lifeguard at Spruce Run State Park in Clinton, N.J. At 17, I was one of the youngest lifeguards on the 12-person staff. Most everyone else was in college. With Round Valley State Park literally down the road, that made for a crew of 24 lifeguards that would get together almost every weekend for a party at someone's house. These were full-blown BYOB or keg parties that sometimes ended up on the beach at Spruce Run. Yes, I can say that I've been "skinny dipping" in Spruce Run Reservoir. I realize this probably isn't a shock after my recent streaking incident :~) Anyway ... Almost every weekend at these parties I'd...

Talkin' Summer Mixin'

Yo fellow mixers and all the rest! I'm sure Ol' Lazy Acres will accuse me of more intimidation tactics, but I see it as "talkin' summer mixin'." Currently listening to what will most likely be my Summer 2008 Mix that I'll place into competition come Tuesday. Listening on the big stereo system for the full effect. I'm diggin' it, I must say. Must add here that for more me, I scratched my 2007 Mix (as it went unjudged) and may or may not have included one or two tracks from that mix in my 2008 edition. I had some trouble with my opener, as I mentioned in another post , then I replaced it not once but twice, and feel very content with my current selection. I shall offer no further info on my 2008 Mix, other than I feel very good about this mix and think it ranks up there with my 2005 and 2006 mixes. While I can't offer a playlist for the evening, I will say that I had a Victory Prima Pils, but it didn't feel quite like a Friday without a Terra...

Opener That Wasn't and 195

Image
Howdy late evening to y'all! Been working on my Summer Mix tonight and haven't had a chance to post until now. Feels strange on what to post as I'm very much caught up in creating my Summer Mix, but don't want to give anything away to my competitors or skew the judges. I will offer a track that was part of my opening for the Summer Mix, but had to pull it finally. Musically, you couldn't ask for a better track at the opening of a Summer Mix, but the lyrics were very contradictory of the music. While this is not unlike many great tracks -- The Replacements come to mind -- really kind of threw off the balance of the mix. Whether or not one of the judges would take note that the lyrics were very dark didn't matter because I knew they were there and couldn't get beyond it. Now, had I been working on a Halloween mix -- oh brotha, would I have a good track! Check out the "Opening Track That Wasn't" at the bottom of this post. In other news... While I...
