A Visit to The Old Dominion
Last weekend, I drove up to Richmond, VA, and the home of Lazy Acres North (LAN). We had tickets to see the Warren Haynes Band in Charlottesville on Saturday night, but not for the Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds acoustic show beforehand. We hoped they would make a guest appearance at our show, and we were not disappointed.
Friday evening, we hit the Capital Ale House for some pre-dinner brews. Had my first-ever cask conditioned Victory Hop Devil IPA.
Dinner at the LAN is always good and the marinated grilled skirt steak and corn was no exception.
The next day we hit the road due west for Charlottesville, but not before a stop at the Blue Mountain Brewery for lunch in Nelson County, VA.
Afterwards we checked into the hotel and then hit the Charlottesville downtown mall where we hoped we might be able to hear the Dave & Tim performance at the outdoor pavilion.
Unfortunately due to the cicadas and distance, this proved to be minimal at best. Finally, we decided to stop torturing ourselves and went down to Miller's where Dave Matthews started out bartending and began playing with his bandmates.
After a pre-show beer, we went over to the Jefferson Theater for the Warren Haynes Band performance. The show didn't start until after Dave & Tim, and got rolling around 10:30 p.m.
This was a great performance, but we knew it would be after seeing them at the DMB Caravan back in June.
When they came back out for the encore, Dave & Time joined them on stage. This may be the first time I've seen Dave perform without a guitar. They first launched into a bluesy-funky "All Along The Watchtower".
They followed it up with a cover of The Band's "The Weight."
It appeared as though they might come back out for one more song, but due to the time, after 1:30 a.m., that was quickly squashed.
We hit Miller's for a post-show drink and did get a final performance after all. Not from Warren or Dave & Tim, but from a foul-mouthed duo made up of a cello and acoustic guitar. They actually had a pretty good sound and I loved the cello solo, but their lyrics could not be repeated in most public circles.
It was a great trip and thanks to Lazy Acres North for their hospitality.
