33rd Is a Good'n

Went to my 33rd Dave Matthews Band show the other night here in Charlotte, and I have a road trip planned next month for two more.

Charlotte always seems to bring out a good show from the band, especially last time they played here in 2010 with surprise guest Branford Marsalis, who joined them for three songs.

Jimmy Joe Pete and I got to the parking lot with plenty of time for tailgating including beers (Sierra Nevada Summerfest for me), cigars, tunes via my new Bose wireless mobile speaker, talking set lists with other fans and people watching - everything from strange folks to beautiful ladies to what were they thinking.

One such fellow we watched as he chatted up every girl who walked by, and it didn't matter that he was older or quite a bit out of shape... OK a lot out of shape especially for someone who looked to be in his 30s. Let's say I would be worried for this guy to walk a flight of stairs. Anyway, one girl walks by and she's very attractive and wearing a nice black cocktail dress. Our fellow offers her a beer and soon they are talking about possibly meeting up at the NASCAR race this weekend. I think she was being nice for taking one of his beers, but you never know.

Technology Tip: I have my music library in iTunes iMatch (cloud server/service) which allows me to listen to anything in my library on my iPhone and I can connect via Bluetooth to my Bose mobile speaker. This is effortless sitting out back at The Woodside, but at a concert venue with thousands of people sending and receiving voice and data, not so good. I can connect to the speaker via hardline (mini to mini) and this would have worked as I had my iPod with me, but I didn't have a cable. Luckily, I had my Xoom tablet in my backpack with a good deal of music on it and was Bluetooth capable. Problem solved, but will have a cable next time.

From the look of this van we passed on our way out of the parking lot Shaggy, Scoob and the gang were there too.

I wasn't sure how our seats would be as they were in the middle behind the VIP boxes and in Row J. Turned out Row J was the first row behind the VIP boxes and no one was in the box in front of us, so not bad at all.

You can't tell from this photo (above), but the guy in yellow would be dancing up a storm later that night. Not sure he had "the moves like Jagger," but was funny to watch... hey good for him, he was having a hell of a time!

They opened with "Big Eyed Fish" which they played the last few shows, but as the song winded down I heard a couple of those dramatic notes from Boyd that signaled the beginning of "Bartender" - hell yeah! That song and quite a few others made their tour debut that night.

DMB set list - 5/23/2012

We got to hear two new songs "Mercy" and "Gaucho" along with long-time favorites "#41", "Grey Street", "Dancing Nancies" and "Crush."

It was a great show and really looking forward to the shows in June with Gary Clark Jr. opening, and the new studio album slated to be released this fall... could that mean a fall/winter tour? One can only hope.

- Salud!
