My 43rd Year & 20th DMB Show

Image
OLD & NEW: While this is a new post it contains information from this past spring, and haven't found time to finish it until now. Friday, April 17, I drove up to Richmond, Va., to catch up with Ol’ Lazy Acres and celebrate my 43rd year. After about a 4-5 hr. drive north, I arrived in Richmond and saw the new Lazy Acres office and met the staff. We ventured into the city and after a couple memory jogs from my time in the River City in the early 90s, we settled in at the Penny Lane British-style pub downtown. I had a Belhaven Twisted Thistle IPA from Scotland and Lazy Acres had the Fullers London Pride Pale Ale . I was expecting the IPA to have that typical old-style flavor of European hops, but was quite surprised to find a taste reminiscent of the American IPAs. Nice stuff, wish I could find it here at the Total Wine, but perhaps soon as I spotted a Belhaven Scottish Ale on the shelves the other day so hopefully the Twisted Thistle IPA isn't too far behind. After a coupl...

Deer and Hop Devils

Happy Friday, y'all! Enjoying a Founders Centennial IPA this evening, it's unfiltered and very nice. So nice, I wish I had picked up more than one. I wasn't sure about it from the description, but it's a definite add to my essential IPA list. As a follow up in its stead, I'm enjoying a local brew Highland Brewing Company's Kashmir IPA, out of Asheville, NC. Another very nice IPA, not as rich as the Founders, but even with its hoppy flavor is quite smooth. As you Facebookers know, I had some visitors this morning as I was readying the coffee pot for its daily brew. I looked out the kitchen window and was surprised to see two young deer in the yard. I usually don't see any deer out back until the late fall or early winter. I immediately went to grab the camera, but knew they would flee as soon as I stepped outside. Thinking now, perhaps I could have gone out the front and snuck around back, but then that wouldn't have helped the light issue as it was jus...

1,000 Miles & 2 Dave Matthews Band Shows

Image
I'm back at The Woodside this weekend after spending last weekend on the road with two Dave Matthews Band shows back to back Friday and Saturday nights. First up was Virginia Beach. Jimmy Joe Pete and I drove up to Virginia and met up with the Lazy Acres crew. We had hoped to meet them at a fine eating and drinking establishment on the bay or beach, but due to traffic never did. I remembered that I saw on AntsMarching.org that VA Beach was not a good tailgating venue and many DMB fans suggested tailgating at Princess Anne Park located next door. Jimmy Joe Pete and I headed there and found many DMB fans chillin', grillin' and enjoying some liquid refreshments from their coolers. We found an empty picnic table and awaited the Lazy Acres crew arrival. They met us for a drink and then we headed to the parking lot only to find everyone tailgating! So much for my advance recon. The Virginia Beach show was great! Highlights included "Jimi Thing" with a chorus of ...

Gov't Mule, Grilled Veggies and the Flying Saucer

Howdy and a Happy Friday to one and all! Had a visit from Ol' Lazy Acres last weekend. Kicked things off last Friday with the Gov't Mule concert at The Fillmore here in Charlotte. The Fillmore is part of a brand new entertainment complex, NC Music Factory , created from old warehouses that also includes an outdoor amphitheater. Waited in line to go through security and while the exterior is the shell of an old warehouse, inside everything looks great and is brand new. All seemed well until the show got underway. Trying to get a beer once the place was packed proved to be quite an effort. They had full bars with only two bartenders per station, and no separate lines for beer vs. cocktails. This created quite a log jam for getting drinks. Aside from that, the concert was great and Gov't Mule put on an excellent show! The sound system was just right, because when I left my ears weren't ringing as they usually are following small venue shows. We started out at the back of ...

Sunday Chillin'

Image
Chillin' inside this evening as it's hot as blazes here! Hoping for a stray storm to pass this way. I would normally step out back for some chillin' - so to speak. Regardless, taking it easy as I ran yesterday and cut the grass today. Enjoying a Terrapin Beer Co. - Rye Pale Ale , and listening to the the Dave Matthews Band Live Trax Vol. 15 recorded at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin. Believe it or not, I have yet to listen to this one from start to finish. Even did it "old school" and popped in the CDs rather than play from iTunes - get up on that dawg! When Monkey was here last weekend we had a couple of Terrapin's on draft at the Thomas St. Tavern, and oh my did they taste good. I like to sit outside there and normally they serve the beers in plastic cups. Instead, we had the Terrapins in frosted glasses - nice! - Sauld!
